How much does a small business website cost?

Between nothing and £21,600, which is a useless answer. So here is the real one, route by route. Every figure names the page we read it on.

Every price below was checked on 22 September 2026. Where a company charges in dollars we say dollars, because converting it would be inventing a number. Where we could not find a published price, the row says so instead of guessing.

We sell one of these routes, the last one. We have listed the other 6 with the parts where they beat us left in.

Why the range is that wide

You are not buying a website. You are buying how much of it you do.

A £7.49 a month builder and a £14,100 agency build are not the same product at two prices. The cheap end sells you a tool. The writing, the photographs and the publishing stay with you. The expensive end does all of it and bills the hours.

That is why most small trades end up with nothing. The money was never the blocker. The 3 hours on a Sunday were.

The trade counter of an old independent ironmonger, brass fittings in labelled wooden drawers and a till by the window.

The kind of business that never got round to it.

Every route

7 ways to get a website, priced.

Read the catch column before the price column. It is where the money you did not budget for lives.

01

Do it yourself on a builder

To start

£0

After that

£7.49 a month at GoDaddy, or 10 to 25 dollars a month at Wix, Squarespace, Framer and 10Web

Right for

Someone who enjoys the work and has a free weekend every month.

The catch

The bill never stops, and the site only exists if you build it. Most trial accounts die on the About page.

Source: GoDaddy UK, Wix, Squarespace, Framer and 10Web pricing pages. Only GoDaddy priced in pounds.

02

An AI website builder

To start

£0

After that

10 to 25 dollars a month

Right for

Someone who wants a first draft in an hour and will edit it themselves.

The catch

You still write the words, pick the photos and press publish. One of these, Hocoos, shut down in April 2026.

Source: Durable, 10Web and Framer pricing pages. All priced in dollars.

03

A freelancer on Fiverr or PeoplePerHour

To start

80 to 700 dollars for a 5 page site

After that

Your domain, about £12 to £28 a year

Right for

Someone who can write a clear brief and chase it.

The catch

The cheap tier is a template swap. Fiverr's own guide puts a small business site at 500 to 5,000 dollars.

Source: Fiverr and PeoplePerHour listings, plus Fiverr's published cost guide.

04

A UK freelance web designer

To start

£1,000 to £3,700 for a 5 page brochure site

After that

£40 to £70 an hour for every change after that

Right for

A business that wants a designer on the phone and can wait 2 to 6 weeks.

The catch

A bigger site runs to £13,300. Every later edit is billed by the hour, so small fixes get put off.

Source: Wise UK rate guides and Opace's modelled UK cost ranges.

05

A UK agency

To start

£5,700 to £21,600 for a brochure or small business site

After that

A monthly retainer is usual but not compulsory

Right for

A business with a marketing budget and someone to manage the project.

The catch

A real published UK retainer price is hard to find. Ask for the number in writing before you sign.

Source: Opace's modelled UK ranges, ex VAT. We could not verify a published UK retainer figure.

06

A Facebook page and nothing else

To start

£0

After that

£0

Right for

A business that gets all its work by word of mouth and wants to keep it that way.

The catch

There is no address to put on a van, and your hours sit under a post about a raffle.

Source: No price to check. This is the option most trades are actually on.

07

Microsprint

That is us

To start

£250 once, after you have seen the finished Site

After that

£150 a year, and nothing in the first 12 months

Right for

An owner who wants it done and does not want to write a brief.

The catch

We build from what is public about you, so the first version can get a detail wrong. One round of fixes is free.

Source: Our own checkout. The price on this page is the price it charges.

Not on any pricing page

4 bills that arrive later.

£12 to £28 a year

Your domain, after the free first year

Nominet charges registrars £3.90 a year for a .co.uk. The rest is the registrar's margin. Check the renewal price, not the 1p offer.

Usually included

Hosting and the padlock

Every builder we checked bundles hosting and SSL. No vendor published a standalone price, so treat a separate hosting bill as a question to ask.

£40 to £70 an hour from a freelancer

Changing a phone number or your hours

Nobody publishes a small change price. The hourly rate is the only figure there is, and a 10 minute job rarely bills as 10 minutes.

The real price

Your own time writing the words

This is what kills most small business websites. Not the money, the 3 hours nobody has on a Sunday.

The third one is worth staring at. A new phone number or a Christmas closure is 10 minutes of work that bills as an hour. So it gets put off. A site with last year’s hours on it is worse than no site.

If you are getting quotes

5 questions that change the number.

01

Who writes the words?

If the answer is you, the quote is not the price. Add your own evenings to it.

02

What does a change cost after it is live?

Get this in writing. It is the cost you will pay most often and the one least often quoted.

03

Who owns the domain?

It should be in your name, not the builder's account. Ask what it renews at, not what year 1 costs.

04

What happens if they stop trading?

Hocoos closed in April 2026 and gave customers a static export. Ask where your site would go.

05

Can I see it before I pay?

Almost nobody says yes. It is the whole reason we work the way we do.

Microsprint is built and run end to end by AI agents on NanoCorp, which is how one company can keep a guide like this current and still answer an Edit the same day. We say what the software is when asked, in these words. Built by machines, checked before it ships.

What £250 contains

One payment, and it comes second.

We read what is already public about your business and build the finished Site first. You look at it, with your own phone number in the header. £250 puts it live at microsprint.nanocorp.app/your-business, hosted by us, with 12 months of hosting and up to 12 Edits included. Annual Support is £150 a year after that. An Edit is one sentence in an email, not a form and not an hourly rate.

If you look at it and do not want it, close the tab. You will not be billed and we do not chase you.

See your price with your name on it.

Type your business name and town. About 4 minutes later the finished Site opens, and then you decide.

No signup, no brief, no monthly fee. More about how we work
